Hotel Review: Hotel Eva, Faro, Portugal - October 2017

Hotel Review: Hotel Eva, Faro, Portugal - October 2017

I stayed at the Hotel Eva in Faro, in October 2017. A double room cost £250 for two people to stay three nights on a bed and breakfast basis.  The hotel is centrally located in Faro right on the port and is a good standard hotel that attracts both business and leisure tourists from a wide range of countries. The hotel has a good rooftop swimming pool, a very decent restaurant with an excellent breakfast buffet, and a nice piano bar.

This film features views of our bedroom (city view standard double on the 4th floor), the swimming pool, restaurant, breakfast buffet, and views over the port from the balcony outside of the top floor restaurant. The film ends with a classic Faro sunset.

This is a great hotel, and if you are thinking of staying in Faro, I highly recommend it.

Review: Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, Canary Is...

Review: Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain - September 2017.

I stayed at the Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort in September 2017, this was part of a Jet2 Holidays package holiday from Leeds. 7 nights all-inclusive on a Royal Elite basis, along with return flights from Leeds Bradford Airport, 22kg hold luggage, 10kg hand luggage and return airport transfers on Lanzarote cost £890 per person. In my opinion this was a good deal.

We stayed on a Royal Elite basis, which gave us access to two exclusive bars with premium drinks (one was adult only) and an exclusive restaurant for breakfast and dinner. We were also located in an adult only area of the hotel with a guaranteed sea view, and in fact a view towards Fuerteventura. The all-inclusive was 24 hours (one bar stayed open overnight, it was self-service beer, wine and soft drinks, as well as make your own cheese toasties!).

Our room was large, clean, air-conditioned and decorated to a stylish modern specification. It came with a large king-sized bed, balcony, free to use safe (with a deposit for the key), desk / dressing table, television, sofa. The bathroom was white and bright, very clean, with bath / shower, toilet, double sink (these were too shallow) and bidet. The room had excellent and free wi-fi, with the transmitter straight outside of our balcony.

This film features views of Playa Blanca; exterior views of the hotel; reception; the lobby; the walk to C building; a detailed inspection of room C433; the sunbathing areas; views over the sea towards Fuerteventura; Papagayo Beach; mini golf; the round building; the tunnel to accommodation blocks A,B,C and D; the lifts; the numerous bars and lounges, restaurants and swimming pools (including an adult only pool); example lunch and dinner items in the restaurants; the gym; sports courts; Papagayo Arena; excerpts from the 'We Will Rock You' musical show; the free shuttle bus to Playa Blanca beach; the journey to Playa Blanca; Playa Blanca Beach; a courtesy room in H Building (H1110) and the views.

This was an excellent hotel, the bedroom was comfortable, the food was very good, and the staff were excellent. I would definitely consider staying here again, and I would also come on a Royal Elite basis.

Hotel Review: Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland - Augu...

Hotel Review: Glenroyal Hotel, Maynooth, County Kildare,
Ireland -
 August, 2017.

I stayed at the Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth, County Kildare,
Ireland in August 2017. Two of us stayed for two nights over a weekend, bed and
breakfast, which cost £288 booked with Booking.com.

The hotel is very centrally located in the town, a 2 minute
walk from where the Airport Hopper bus drops you off, and a 5 minute walk from
Maynooth Railway station. We arrived early due to catching an early flight, but
despite this we were found a room by very helpful and friendly receptionist
'Katie' and could so check in several hours early.

After checking in, we had a good breakfast at the Shoda
Market Cafe, which is within the hotel building (Farmer John's or Farmer Jack's
Breakfast - the precise name escapes me).

The hotel is very well presented with thick carpets and well
maintained decor. The room we were allocated 207, was fairly small, with just a
double bed, I must admit we have got used to king-sized beds when staying in
hotels, so this bed did feel a bit on the small side. The bathroom had a
walk-in shower, with just a small step up, along with sink and toilet, all good
really.

One of the reasons that we booked this hotel, was that it
had a swimming pool, what we had not realised though, was that the hotel had
two large pools, one a family 'leisure' pool, the other an adult only swimming
pool. Both of the pools were great. The adult pool was often busy, but we found
that the leisure pool was fairly quiet on an evening. They were a real high
point of our stay, the swimming pools and leisure facilities at this hotel are
truly excellent.

The restaurant was very busy at breakfast, but we managed to
find a table. The breakfast is buffet style, but the hot items are served to
you by some very fast and efficient chefs.

The hotel has a very good bar, Saint's Bar, which the Rose
of Tralee contestants were enjoying a singalong in there one evening during our
stay.

Unfortunately our room was not great, it was South facing
and got very hot, but if you opened the window you got the noises and smells
from the extractor fans from the kitchen and restaurant. What was worse though,
was that out neighbour in room 205 was very loud on the phone for long periods
of time, and we could hear every word, the walls between rooms are evidently
thin. We decided to ask if we could move rooms, and again Katie on reception
was exceptionally helpful. We moved along the corridor to room 211, which was
still south facing and hot, but at least we no longer had the noisy neighbour.

If I ever visit Maynooth again in future, I would still
consider staying at this hotel, BUT I would ask for a room on the 2nd floor at
the very end of a corridor with a car park view. If you are considering staying
here, I would recommend you making this request before your stay.

In summary, this is an excellent hotel, with great staff,
excellent leisure facilities and a super breakfast, but the rooms and beds are
a little on the small side, the bedroom walls are seemingly quite thin, and the
South facing rooms get very hot on sunny days.

This film features external views of the hotel, the
reception, The Roses of Tralee (who were attending an event at the hotel), the
lift / elevator, the 2nd floor, detailed room reviews of room 207 and 211, the
breakfast buffet, the restaurant, the leisure club, the leisure swimming pool,
the adult swimming pool, the hydro-therapy pool, Shoda Market Cafe and Saint's
Bar.

Hotel Review: Maritim Hotel, Königswinter, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany ...

Hotel Review: Maritim Hotel, Königswinter, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany - August, 2017.

In August 2017 I had a five day break in Germany, travelling from Stuttgart to Düsseldorf. During this journey I spent a night in Königswinter at the Maritim Hotel.

The hotel is situated on the River Rhine front in Königswinter, a 10 minute walk from the railway station, and a 2 minute walk from the Königswinter to Mehlem ferry stop and Königswinter Fähre tram stop.

The last time that I stayed at this hotel, I had a very negative experience due to building works that were taking place. When I arrived at the hotel this time, I could see that building works were still happening, as the reception desk was under refurbishment and a temporary reception desk had been set up in the hotel lobby.

Check-in was quick and easy with a friendly receptionist who spoke good English. I asked for a room on a high floor with a River view, and got a room on the 1st floor, the view was excellent though.

My room, number 116, was a Superior Room, which cost €141.91, the view of the River Rhine costs extra at this hotel, but this was a last night treat to myself. The room had a luggage storage area, wardrobe, tea and coffee making facilities, mini bar, safe, desk, flat screen TV, desk chair, comfy chair, lamps, ample plug sockets, coffee table, and a huge king-sized bed. As I had booked the room as a single room, I had only a single quilt and one pillow, which I found very mean indeed.

The room was newly refurbished to a high specification and had excellent air-conditioning.

The bathroom was also newly refurbished with a shiny black and white colour scheme. The shower had annoyingly been put over a bath. I do believe that when refurbishing this hotel that baths should have been removed and shower cubicles installed. I also have great issue with the tiled floor in the bathroom, which was extremely slippery when wet - I consider this a case of style over substance, and a huge health and safety risk. In this day and age, a non-slip flooring should have been installed during the refurbishment.

The swimming pool had been completely refitted and was absolutely beautiful to swim in, very refreshing indeed. This is a real highlight of this hotel.

This film features external views of the hotel, as well as views of the lobby / reception, lift / elevator, 1st floor corridor, a detailed inspection of room 116, level -1, the gym and swimming pool.

This is a very expensive hotel, and that is its downside, I stay here occasionally only. I will certainly return again at some point in future, and if you are thinking of stopping in Königswinter, there probably isn't a nicer hotel to stay in.

Koblenz to Königswinter, Rhine valley views of Rhineland-Palatinate and Nordrhein-Westfalen from a regional train, Germany - 9th August, 2017.

In August 2017 I had a five day break in Germany, travelling from Stuttgart to Düsseldorf. This film features the journey from Koblenz Hauptbahnhof to Königswinter. The film was made with a window mounted Veho Muvi action cam.

The railway line from Koblenz to Königswinter hugs the River Rhine for much of the route and is a very scenic journey indeed. The beauty of this landscape helped inspire the romantic poetry movement of the 18th and 19th Centuries.

En-route, the train travels through: Ehrenbreitstein, Vallendar, Engers, Neuwied, Irlich, Leutesdorf, Oberhammerstein, Hammerstein, Rheinbrohl, Bad Hönningen, Leubsdorf, Wallen, Linz am Rhein, Erpel, Unkel, Rheinbreitbach, Bad Honnef, and Rhöndorf.

Mainz to Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate Rhine valley views from an Intercity train, Germany - 9th August, 2017

In August 2017 I had a five day break in Germany, travelling from Stuttgart to Düsseldorf. This film features the journey from Mainz to Koblenz via Intercity train. The film was made with a window mounted Veho Muvi action cam.

Favorite Parkhotel 0817

Hotel Review: Favorite Parkhotel, Mainz, Rhineland Palatinate, Germany - August 2017.

In August 2017 I had a five day break in Germany, travelling from Stuttgart to Düsseldorf. During this journey I stayed one night in Mainz at the Favorite Parkhotel.

The hotel is located outside the centre of Mainz approximately 2 kms south of the hauptbahnhof. It is adjacent to the Südbrucke rail / pedestrian bridge over the River Rhine and is a 15 minute walk from Mainz Römisches Theater railway station, which is the closest station and a lovely walk through the Stadtpark, which is directly behind the hotel.

The hotel is built into a hill, which slopes outside, and this means that internally, that there are quite a few stairs to get from one end of the building to the other. The hotel has a modern airy feel, is bright internally and decorated to a high quality specification.

The reception has a bright lobby area for sitting and a very novel aquarium built into one of the walls. The reception staff were friendly and spoke excellent English. I asked for a room on a high floor with a good view, and I was given a room on the 5th floor (out of 6) with a road view. At the time of entering the room I was none the wiser that this was an inferior view, so was happy upon arrival at the room (read on for the full story).

To get to the room via lift / elevator you need to use your key card, this is a good security measure. The lift had a glass side, which was nice and novel for a view of the outside.

The fifth floor corridor was decorated with football memorabilia of FSV Mainz 05. The room I was allocated - 547, was next to the lift shaft. Upon entering I didn't realise what a problem this would be. The lift was noisy and I could constantly hear it during my stay, this is one reason that I would never stay in that particular room again.

The room cost €89.10 booked with Booking.com room only. It was nicely decorated, with a good king-sized bed, it had good air-conditioning, nice decor (reminiscent of a Park Inn by Radisson), luggage storage area, mirrors, wardrobe, safe, mini-bar, storage cupboards, flat screen Phillips TV, plenty of plug sockets, a table computer, desk, chair, lamps, comfy chair, clock radio, and Juliette balcony. As I had booked a single room, I was given a single duvet, one large pillow and on small pillow. I found this a little on the mean side.

The bathroom had a window to it from the bedroom, and I never worked out if the glass would go opaque or not, it's really quite voyeuristic if not! The bathroom was nice and airy and clean, the shower was unfortunately over a bath.

The toilet was in a separate room, but unfortunately there was no sink in this room, meaning that all toilet users have to use the door handle without washing their hands, I find this quite disgusting. It is very unhygienic and leads to germ transference.

Apart from that I found the room to be very nice, I liked it a lot and was quite satisfied with it.

I decided to go for a swim, I took advice from reception as to how to get to the pool from my room, unfortunately the pool was a LONG walk away, down LOTS OF STEPS. Top tip, if you are staying at this hotel in the 'upper block', ignore the instructions from reception, go to the 5th floor, walk through the gym (getting a free bottle of water en-route), outside across the deck past the spa bath (be careful if the deck is wet), enter the other door, and take that lift down to the pool. It will save you a 5 minute walk down about 10 flights of stairs.

The pool was very nice, not huge, but it had fully functioning hydro pumps and a bubble spa area. It was very nice to swim in, and I had a very enjoyable swim in there. The poolside shower was also very good.

The hotel has a biergarten, which was very nice, as was the bar. The beer prices (€4.50 for half a litre of pilsner) were quite reasonable for a hotel.

The breakfast buffet cost extra (€15.00), but was a little treat to myself, and it was very nice with an excellent selection. The restaurant was comfortable, and I had a good view of the trains crossing the Südbrucke.

Upon checking out of the hotel, I walked through the Stadtpark to Mainz Römisches Theater railway station, and it was on this side of the hotel, that I realised that I had been given an inferior room, as the rooms on the park side of the hotel have full balconies and a nice view. Furthermore, they are away from the noisy lift. If I were to stay at this hotel again, I would INSIST on having a room on a high floor, with a park view, well away from the elevator.

In summary, this is an excellent hotel, and I did very much enjoy my stay here. I would certainly stay here again if I was visiting Mainz in future, but I would make a more informed room choice at the time of booking, and I would take the quick route to the swimming pool!

Mannheim to Mainz, views of Bäden-Wurttemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate from a Deutsche Bahn Intercity Train, Germany - 8th August, 2017.

In August 2017 I had a five day break in Germany, travelling from Stuttgart to Düsseldorf. This film features the journey from Mannheim to Mainz via Intercity train. The film was made with a window mounted Veho Muvi action cam.

The passing landscape of Bäden-Wurttemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate towns, cities, countryside and the River Rhine are featured throughout the film.

Hotel Review: Le Méridien, Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany - Augus...

Hotel Review: Le Méridien, Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany - August, 2017.

I visited the city of Stuttgart in the German state of Baden-Württemberg for two days in August 2017, whilst there I explored extensively and made a number of travel films, that are linked below.

Stuttgart  is the capital and largest city of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, to read more about Stuttgart, click here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuttgart .

I stayed at Le Méridien, Stuttgart in August 2017, I stayed for two nights, room only, which cost €310 room only booked with Booking.com. When booking, the hotel I checked on Google Maps how close it was to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof, and it looked a short walk away, however I had not factored in the impact of Stuttgart 21, and the resultant difficulties in hauling heavy luggage up and down walkways and steps. I learned the hard way that a taxi from the Hauptbahnhof would be a much simpler option. There really are quite a few steps that are not suitcase friendly.

The hotel is very large, and quite luxurious. Reception is cavernous decorated with art works. The receptionists spoke excellent English, and check-in was quick and easy.

The lift was very large and very quick, I had asked for a room on a high floor, and ended up with a room on the second floor.  The room was large and beautifully decorated, with a huge king-sized bed, flat screen TV, wardrobes, desk and chair, easy chair, safe, iron and ironing board, air conditioning, hairdryer, and mini bar. The room was very stylish indeed, it also had ample plug sockets and wall mounted USB sockets.

The bathroom was bright and shiny, with an accessible shower cubicle and a range of free toiletries.

The fitness and wellness are called Le Spa, was quite a walk away, but very worth visiting, the gym was well equipped, there were a variety of saunas, but best by far was the really lovely swimming pool, which was mostly very quiet and an absolute joy to swim in.

The bar was very decent and not expensive for food or drinks, the staff were also very efficient and friendly.

This film features views of Stuttgart 21, views of the hotel exterior, reception / lobby, lift / elevator, a detailed room review of room 235, the first floor mezzanine, the walk to Le Spa fitness area; the gym, swimming pool, sauna area and bar.

This really was an excellent hotel, and I would absolutely stay here again in future, although I will probably wait until Stuttgart 21 is completed before returning to the city.
